This page is intended to tell some stories and list some links, etc.  We'd love to have more material.  Tony and Trudie made the cover of The Golden Age Of the Accordion - an industry milestone publication.  Curly and Spud are pictured on Pine Grove Press Flickr photostream - see the link.  There's a reported Curly sighting on YouTube and an assumed Spud video also.  Follow the links and let us know if these are good or not so good.  Great thanks.
Our other pages are set up to not require scrolling - and you go from page to page

This is our only Long Page - so Scroll Baby Scroll.  Our chronology will appear in oldest-to-most-recent order.  If we get a lot of action, we'll revamp the way it works and maybe create a blog, etc.     For now - we're just going to paste our mail into the site as we recieve it.  We will make your name and email address obscure as a default - unless you specifically indicate an okay to post your info wiith  your message.   Please pardon our technique if it gets a bit junky - we're enthusiasts, not experts.

This first messge is our own story - as mentioned on previous page(s).  Therefore, it is not a mail message.  It's here to make homage, tell you what we know (or think we know) and get things started, etc.  It's here to get our story down somewhere - as we've covered it directly in mails to folks for the last couple of weeks - and it's time to get it into a better format.  Here we go:
                                                      O U R    M E S S A G E
Please notice that we'll go from "we" to "I" here - as most of this is just being done by me.  I am a near age 60 member of an old San Antonio family - the Slimp family.   For this site - we have tenacles to the Watson, the Naylor, the Ingersol and Elliot families.  All of our people from the subject generation are passed - and part of this effort is to honor their good spirit and the way San Antonio was "back in that day".  These people were fine folks and real sluggers - they loved the city and liked to get out and celebrate, dance, schmooz, raise hell, etc.  They frequented The Red Carpet Club, The St Anthony Club, The Plaza Club and stopped-by most of the others.  Our subject players (as mentioned) were mainstay performers in every venue around and had a reach way beyond San Antonio - and a reach beyond their own generation.  In addition to sustaining themselves as musicians (seems you could actually do that at one time), they were mentors and teachers of their craft.  They had music stores and other endeavors - or so my surfing thus far indicates, anyway.   My story revolves around Tony - and I'm only going to touch on Spud and Curly.  Spud and Curly were famous with Tony - and are on the record that is the essence of this website.  On the other hand - I actually knew Tony.  I knew him as an almost uncle or such.  He was always around if we had an occasion - whether he was to play or not - he and Trudie were invited and they stopped in many times.  Tony played a lot too.  He could play solo - or would have some other players with him - depending on whatever the circumstances were, I guess.  I couldn't say whether I ever met Spud and Curly or not.  I was a kid.

I could go on - and might later - but I want to get to the LP record - my principal purpose.  I borrowed the record from Tony around 1981 - in advance of my mother's 64th birthday.  The record was made in 1962.  It included Adios mi Vida - a really important favorite of my moms.  As the Beatles song goes "when I'm 64" - I was going to create a special tape for mother's 64th.   I did one called Beatles For Great Moms for the occasion - and I wanted to get what she actually wanted to hear too.  I knew Tony from my entire life as a kid - and I was then about 30 and living in Austin.  I called Tony about Adios mi Vida - and the rest is our history here.  He had it on his record with Spud and Curly - and encouraged me to come get it.  I went by his home on Craig and had a fine visit (Trudie made some fine Iced Tea for the occasion) - and I was taken that he couldn't even play the record anymore eiither.  His turntable was long done for - and he hadn't listened to the record in a long time.

I went on my way and promised to return the record - and I did.  I also made a cassette tape of it for him and he was just so pleased to pop it in his player and enjoy the 20 year old set of him and his mates.  What you'll hear on this site is a digital dup I made from the cassette I made from the record.  The cassette was made in a decent home studio - but at the time, EQ was about it - and the record was worn already.  The photo on this site came along at the same time - and I dont remember if it was the record cover or what the name of the record was.  I got my project done and took care of my mom and took care of Tony too.  So here we are in Nov 2010.

I surfed on to Pine Grove Press and their Flickr site while looking for Rock and Roll band info - and there was Spud and Curly, etc.  I wanted to share what I knew I had (the record) - and decided to go this way when I found that there was virtualy zero out there to actually hear.  Remembrances and such are all flowing from having the material and doing a little research.

I'm spent for now - so send me your stories..  And great thanks for reading.

WOW Neat information. Tony was a great accordion teacher. The fact that I can remember so much of what he taught me and that I can learn things on my own too is proof of that. You are so right, so many of the "old ones" are gone. A friend taught at their old studio on N St Mary's street. Do you remember the studio?

I was a student of Tony Rozance in the 60s and 70s. I am the president of the San Antonio Accordion Association and I still play the accordion to this day. I am now teaching. I would love to hear the recordings of Tony and his trio. I do remember them when they played at the St Anthony Hotel. I used to be the last student on the list before he played his gigs there - and we always had a GREAT lesson.

After looking at your site on Tony Rozance, I recalled that they played special occasions at Oak Hills Country Club.  Am I right or wrong?  Just strolling among diners, evening gigs, not lunchtime stuff.  I could be wrong, but just came to me.
Follow the YouTube link we included above and listen to Spud do that great picking he's famous for....

My parents owned several restaurants near WOAI TV/Radio (Navarro and St. Mary’s, at the tall tower) for many years. Owing to both the proximity to WOAI and the casual environment of our restaurants, Spud, Curly and Tony were frequent visitors to eat or just drop by, have a drink and visit with their buds and regale everyone with their stories and music . In many ways, as a young lad they were like my adopted uncles.

They and the WOAI employees would invite me almost daily to the station for shows and I probably heard every song they ever did together one time or another. They appeared very frequently on radio and early TV so I was in the “audience” as a young kid and teen…..wonderful days indeed. Spud especially was such an amazing, unique and talented guitarist that he clearly was my idol and, when I want to take lessons from him….and he offered to do so….but he wisely suggested that instead, I should take several years of piano so I could really be grounded in reading music and learning the basics vs. just picking up an ax and playing…..very good advice indeed.

It is so heartwarming to relive those days via the website and to keep the memories of those three amigos alive via the internet. Thanks Chester for all of your efforts….
